Wellington requires Airport improvements

29 August 2013

Wellington requires Airport improvements

Property Council remains committed to the extension of Wellington Airport’s runway, despite the publically stated reservations of senior National Ministers Hon Bill English and Hon Steven Joyce.

The focus must be on not only the completion of the runway extension – but the Ngauranga to Airport project as well – said Property Council’s Wellington Branch President Ian Cassels.

“These projects will lead to a sustainable and vibrant compact city; their completion is necessary.

“The focus must move from maintaining current infrastructure and completing small to medium projects, to making the bold decisions that Wellington needs.

“New Zealand must not rely on Auckland for its economic growth. Wellington is abundant in opportunities, with its lower commercial property rents, better integrated public transport networks, and cheaper housing.”

Wellington is a significant contributor to New Zealand’s GDP and has the highest GDP per capita in New Zealand. Property Council believes an extension to the runway coupled with the completion of the Ngauranga to Airport project will provide tangible economic benefits for Wellington and New Zealand and increase Wellington’s international standing and connections.

“Wellington is in a prime position and is ready to become a bigger player on the international stage. A runway extension and the completion of the Ngauranga to Airport project will provide the impetus towards achieving this,” said Cassels.
