This morning, Roy Morgan Research’s Howard Seccombe launched the latest edition of The Digital Universe, New Zealand’s most comprehensive digital media and behavioural research report, featuring data gathered between January 2008 and June 2013, from an average 12,000 interviews annually.
Providing a 360-degree view of the current digital landscape in New Zealand, the report explores how new media is affecting New Zealanders’ daily lives: their shopping habits and socialisation, media consumption and attitudes.
The report also contains a fascinating, in-depth comparison of New Zealand and Australia’s technology adoption and use.
Significant findings include:
• New Zealanders spent over $5.4 billion online in the last financial year
• 31.4% of Kiwis paid for online purchases using a credit card
• Growth in tablet ownership among Kiwis has skyrocketed 557% since 2009
• Desktop computer ownership has dropped dramatically in New Zealand since 2009
• New Zealanders are less concerned about the privacy implications of new technology than Australians
• 53.1% of New Zealanders use their mobile phone more than their home phone
• Kiwis lag behind Australians in smartphone ownership
Pip Elliott, General Manager, Roy Morgan Research NZ, says:
“Digital technologies have transformed the way we all relate to each other, shop, play, work and more. The rise of the connected consumer, especially, has had a profound impact on businesses throughout New Zealand.
“Our extensive research— based on the experiences of over 12,000 New Zealanders annually — casts a critical spotlight on today’s ever-changing Digital Universe, and is a vital tool for businesses wishing to adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies.”
