Credit Union Industry Dedication Honoured at Industry Awards
A number of dedicated credit union staff and one long serving credit union director were honoured recently with an Individual Recognition Award at the credit union industry awards dinner held at the Novotel Auckland Airport Hotel on Saturday 21st September 2013.
Rhonda Clare, General Manager of NZCU Steelsands; Rob Collins, General Manager of NZCU Auckland; Gavin Earle, Chief Executive of NZCU Baywide, Lynda Matoe, Team Leader, NZQU Baywide (Wanganui) and Kerry Woodroofe, Director of NZCU Employees all received the ‘Individual Recognition Award’ at the New Zealand Association of Credit Unions’ (NZACU) Annual Gala Awards event. The event was attended by over 150 credit union and mutual building society boards and managers from all over New Zealand, as well as key business partners of the industry group.
Guests at the event included Australian and Canadian credit union industry colleagues, and a representative from the World Council of Credit Unions’ board, director Scott Kennedy, who travelled from Canada to help present the awards at the Gala Dinner.
Recipients of the awards were nominated by fellow credit union representatives, and were awarded based on their valuable contribution to their credit union and local community by the Board of NZACU, the cooperatively owned industry body that represents 23 Member credit unions and mutual building societies throughout the country.
An additional award, the ‘People Helping People Award’ was presented to the credit union that, in the opinion of the judges, has made a significant and positive impact in their community. This year’s recipient was AWHI credit union, based in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, who were recognised for their outstanding dedication in serving their members’ and the community.
Several organisations were also recognised at the awards ceremony for achieving significant milestones in serving their membership - NZCU Steelsands (35 years), Police and Families Credit Union (40 years), Heretaunga Building Society (80 years) and Nelson Building Society (150 years in 2012).
Independently owned and operated by their members for their members, credit unions and building societies provide a similar range of services to a bank and any profits are returned to the members in a combination of ways i.e. fairer fees and interest rates with community involvement.
