The Otago Polytechnic School of Design has earned international acclaim, featuring in Vogue Italia for the fourth year in a row. The Vogue Italia 2013 - Emerging Designers edition has profiled 200 emerging designers from around the world, including Otago Polytechnic Design graduate, Soohee Moon.

“We’re thrilled to be featured in such a high-calibre publication,” says Dr Margo Barton, Academic Leader at the School of Design, Otago Polytechnic. “This is a wonderful achievement for Soohee and will open many doors for her.”

Ms Moon, who graduated from Otago Polytechnic in 2012, has already achieved several milestones in her career, showcasing her designs at the Shanghai Fashion Week in 2012, and contributing towards designing the staff uniform at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin.

“I feel so privileged to be involved in this publication and I’m very excited about my future in design,” says Ms Moon, who currently works for renowned New Zealand designer, NomD*. “I would like to own my own label one day, so this experience and the exposure is truly amazing.”

Vogue Italia has invited the School of Design to submit their graduates’ top portfolios for the past four years. The Otago Polytechnic Fashion staff nominates ten graduates based on their creative fashion communication portfolios, and Dr Barton tallies the votes.

“To even be invited to submit a portfolio is a significant achievement for any aspiring designer and a major coup for the Design School,” says Dr Margo. “We’ve had at least one to two graduates feature every year since our first invitation.”

The School of Design (Fashion) is renowned for producing designers that have gone on to establish successful businesses including Sara Munro from Company of Strangers and Abby van Schreven from Maaike. Graduates have also worked for some of the world’s most famous designers including Tara Viggo at River Island, London, and Shola Steele, former designer at Sisley in Italy.

Dr Margo is confident next year’s invitation will bring the same success. “Looking at the current student work, I’m quite confident we will continue to have success in 2014.”
