Tachikawa Workers Laid Off
Receivers for Rotorua based Tachikawa Forest Products gave 120 workers termination notices this morning.
At a face to face meeting with 80 workers called by FIRST Union the KordaMentha receivers indicated they would not be able to restart trading and are now seeking a buyer for the business and assets.
FIRST Union General Secretary, Robert Reid, said the workers are desolate at losing their jobs but also somewhat relieved at knowing where they stood and at being able to get on with planning what to do next.
Robert Reid said the workers are owed significant money by the company but would have to wait for some time before getting it.
“They are entitled to holiday pay and redundancy payments up to a maximum of $20,340 depending on how many years’ service they have,” he said.
“But they will have to wait for creditors to pay the company before they get anything and may even have to wait until the assets are sold so it could be a while.”
Work and Income, IRD and a Whanau Ora group were at the meeting to offer advice to the laid off workers.
FIRST Union Wood Sector Secretary, Rawiri Daniels said the union would continue to stand beside the workers and would be doing everything possible to ensure that Work and Income and other agencies operated in a way that meets the unique needs of the workers.
