New Vehicle Registrations Soar

New vehicle sales of 10696 have soared on the back of growing economic confidence says David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association. October registrations of new commercial vehicles were up 33% and passenger car sales up 8.5% up on October 2012, a combined increase of 14%.

Toyota remains the market leader for the month of October with 24.9% market share (2664 units) with Ford second on 12.80% (1366 units) and and Holden third with 11.3% (1205 units).

Mr Crawford said, “In the month of October new commercial vehicle registrations were 2734, the highest October new commercial registrations since the MIA began collecting records in 1981. It’s the second month in a row that records have been the highest since records began”. There were 682 more new commercial registrations compared to October 2012, an increase of 33%. Year to date registrations are 26.5% ahead over the same period in 2012.

Passenger car sales YTD were up 6.7% on the same period last year with 7962 new cars sold in October, the highest October monthly registrations since 1984. Toyota retained the largest market share of passenger car registrations in October with 25.9% (2063 units), followed by Holden with11.9% market share (949 units) and Ford with 10.3% (824 units). The Toyota Corolla remains the top selling model with 12% market share (963 units), followed by Holden Commodore with 4% and Toyota Yaris at 4%. The Toyota Rav4 and Ford Mondeo were the next best-selling models, also with 3% each of market share.

While Toyota also had the largest October market share for commercial vehicle registrations (22%), with Ford (19.8%) and Holden (9.4%), the top selling commercial model was the Ford Ranger with 17% market share (478 units). This was followed by Toyota Hilux with 14% (396 units) and Holden Colorado at 9% market share (233 units). Year to date the Toyota Hilux remains the top selling commercial vehicle with 3998 registrations (16% market share) closely followed by the Ford Ranger with 3870 registrations (15% market share).

The sale of sports utility vehicles represented 24% of all vehicles sales in October, followed by small passenger cars at 22% and pick-ups/chassis-cabs at 17%.

Mr David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association said today that if the current strong sales continue it is likely total new vehicle registrations for 2013 will exceed 112,800 units, an increase of approximately 12,000 units over 2012 volumes.
