Kiwi brands make a clean sweep of Fairtrade Awards
• Whittaker’s Fairtrade Dark Ghana, All Good Fairtrade Bananas & Micah Clothing’s Fairtrade Classic T-shirt voted kiwi favourites
• Support for ethical consumerism still strong
Kiwis rallied behind
Fairtrade Certified products this October, and voted for
their favourites; Whittaker’s Fairtrade Dark Ghana (Large
Category), All Good’s Fairtrade Bananas (Medium Category),
and Micah Clothing’s Fairtrade Classic T-shirt (Small
Category).
New Zealanders were asked to show their support for their favourite Fairtrade Products by voting for them online. In its second year, the Fairtrade Product Awards ran from 30th September – 13th October 2013 and featured 25 leading and innovative brands.
The Awards shine a light on Fairtrade brands in New Zealand who have taken the greatest steps to help create better futures for farmers, their families, & communities in developing countries. Kiwi consumers are rewarding these companies for giving these farmers a fair go by voting not just in the Awards but through their shopping choices. 2012 sales of Fairtrade Certified products are up 16.5% from the year before, showing how strongly Kiwis support farmers being paid fairly.
“There has been strong growth in Fairtrade over the years thanks to New Zealanders’ supporting Fairtrade. The demand for Fairtrade products has increased with sales in New Zealand increasing to $52 million last year,” says Steve Knapp, CEO of Fairtrade Australia & New Zealand. “Congratulations to the 2013 Fairtrade Product Award winners who have committed to meaningful trade relationships with the farmers who grow their product.”
The Awards were won in 3 categories; large, medium, and small business. The 3 winning Fairtrade Certified products in 2013 are all by kiwi brands. Whittaker’s Dark Ghana Block, All Good’s Bananas, and Micah Clothing’s Classic T-shirt were voted New Zealand favourites by consumers across the country.
