Businesses recognised for excellence or innovation in workplace safety
Kiwi businesses of all descriptions are working hard to make their workplaces safer, and ACC has been helping to shine a spotlight on them – to celebrate their success stories, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.
Between June and November this year, ACC sponsored a ‘workplace safety award’ at seven business awards around New Zealand.
A total of 21 companies were selected as finalists, with the ACC awards going to businesses that were able to demonstrate excellence or innovation in workplace safety systems, practices or culture.
Winners this year included engineering and manufacturing companies, a charitable trust, a skydiving operator, a sawmilling and timber processing company and an airport.
ACC’s General Manager of Insurance and Prevention Services, John Beaglehole, says “It was encouraging to see businesses from a wide range of industries enter the awards this year.
“This suggests the safety message is starting to take root across the spectrum of Kiwi businesses.
“New Zealand has a higher rate of work-related injuries than comparable countries such as Australia and England, so it’s great to see Kiwi businesses where a safety-conscious approach is the norm, not an exception.
“Hopefully, by showcasing the winners it will help prompt businesses who may be lagging behind with their safety focus to say ‘We should be doing that too’”.
Judges for the ACC Workplace Safety Award include ACC Injury Prevention Management Consultants, and independent health and safety experts.
“The business awards at which the ACC Workplace Safety Award is presented are landmark events on the social calendar in their respective communities, and each year feature distinguished guests and speakers.
“So they provide a really good environment to celebrate safety success stories, and spread the safety message.”
Sponsoring safety awards is just one way ACC is encouraging businesses to become safer. ACC also supports targeted injury prevention campaigns, and offers workplace health and safety advice and levy discounts ties to safety performance.
