Role of Airports Has Never Been Clearer

New Chair of New Zealand Airports Association Believes the Role of Airports Has Never Been Clearer

Steven Sanderson, Chief Executive of Wellington Airport, has been appointed Chair of the New Zealand Airports Association (NZ Airports).

One of the many issues Mr Sanderson will address during his 12-month tenure as NZ Airports Chair, is communicating the value the country’s national network of airports delivers to regional and national economies, through travel and tourism.

“All airports are working together with our airline partners to deliver new routes and capacity. We are looking forward to continuing our contribution towards the growth of New Zealand’s travel and tourism industry” he said.

Mr Sanderson added: “Ensuring the ability to grow in the future will be critical to our future as a productive and prosperous nation.

“This is a very busy time for airports, with major reviews of aviation legislation under way and several projects around the country focussing on ensuring airport facilities are kept up-to-date to meet growth and passenger demands.

“NZ Airports is also very active in supporting the Government’s drive for better air service agreements with other countries, especially the growing economies around Asia. This is a key step in enabling new routes and expanded air capacity for New Zealand tourism and trade.”

Mr Sanderson also outlined a priority for NZ Airports, which is to continue working with the Commerce Commission and the new information disclosure regime for investment, service quality and pricing at airports.

NZ Airports Chief Executive, Kevin Ward, said airports welcome Mr Sanderson’s appointment.

“NZ Airports has benefited tremendously from the strong leadership of its Chairs and Steven’s appointment will ensure this continues,” said Mr Ward.

Mr Sanderson joined Wellington Airport in February last year and his career has been predominantly in infrastructure business, including airports, ports and electricity.
