Waikato-Tainui Offer Marae Insurance Package

Waikato-Tainui Offer Marae Insurance Package

Safeguarding marae for future generations is the motivation behind Waikato-Tainui offering a comprehensive marae insurance package.

On July 1 Waikato-Tainui will roll out its marae insurance scheme which offers Waikato raupatu marae full insurance cover at no cost.

Rahui Papa, Chairman of Waikato-Tainui tribal executive Te Arataura, says marae are the lifeblood of our iwi and their protection and maintenance is a key a priority. “Our insurance package will ensure our marae are covered effectively across all areas.”

The insurance package will cover marae for damage to marae buildings and contents, loss or damage to taonga or items of cultural significance, lost revenue due to interruption of commercial activities, public liability for damages to a third party or personal injury, and statutory liability.

Mr Papa says, “This type of cover can be costly for our marae and we want to help them save money while ensuring our marae continue to be safeguarded for future generations.

“We intend for this insurance package to be the first of many schemes we offer our tribal members as we are currently looking into the feasibility of tangihanga and medical insurance.”

Waikato-Tainui will officially launch its marae insurance package at an event held at Te Awa – The Base on June 26.
