Ngāti Awa Cast Net Wide In Search For Commercial Leaders

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa is widening its scope in the hunt for directors for the Whakatāne based iwi authority’s commercial arm Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited (NAGHL).

Registrations of interest are invited by 31st October for three vacant director positions on the company responsible for the profitable management of Ngāti Awa commercial assets.

Interim Chairperson of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa Appointment and Remuneration Committee Materoa Dodd says traditionally there has been a preference to appoint directors from within the iwi and while the board has been very well served by that strategy in the past, the intention this time was to also actively seek interest from outside of the tribal base.

“We have cast the net a little wider this time in terms of our advertising of the directorship opportunities with the hope of attracting a wider range of candidates with the necessary attributes and skills to advance the commercial interests of the iwi” Materoa Dodd says with NAGHL’s diverse investment portfolio comprising farming, fisheries quota, forestry, equities and property, identifying and recruiting individuals with proven expertise in those areas is imperative, even if it meant looking outside of the iwi.

“We do have substantial levels of capability within the iwi but we want to make sure we are not limiting our potential by not also considering highly suitable candidates from outside of Ngāti Awa."

The tribe enters its second post settlement decade with a record of strong commercial performance resulting in 43% growth of the iwi asset base since its Treaty of Waitangi claims were settled in 2005.

Materoa Dodd said the challenge for the new directors was to build sustained intergenerational growth from this momentum.

“We’re treating this as an opportunity to bring new skills and talent to NAGHL, and to grow the Ngāti Awa commercial asset base in a complex operating environment” Registrations of interest in NAGHL directorships close at 3pm, Friday October 31st, 2014.
