One New Director, Four New Shareholders’ Councillors Elected

Today, following the close of voting in the 2014 Fonterra Elections it has been confirmed that one new Director and four new Shareholders’ Councillors will take office after the Fonterra Annual Meeting on Wednesday, 12 November.

Newly elected Director Leonie Guiney and incumbents John Monaghan and David McLeod were the three successful Director candidates.

Fonterra Shareholders’ Council Chairman, Ian Brown: “I would like to welcome Leonie to the role and congratulate John and David on their re-election.

“The Council will continue to maintain a strong and effective working relationship with the Board.”

Mr Brown confirmed the results of the four contested Shareholders’ Council elections which saw Penny Smart, Malcolm Piggott, Wilson James and Ellen Bartlett elected in their respective wards.

Ward 2 – Central Northland: Penny Smart
Ward 7 – Piako: Malcolm Piggott
Ward 14 – Eastern Bay of Plenty: Wilson James
Ward 22 – Northern Manawatu: Ellen Bartlett

Mr James joins Matt Pepper, Shaun Lissington and Emma Hammond, who were elected earlier in the process, as new Councillors.

“Succession is important for our Council and the Co-op and I welcome Matt, Wilson, Shaun and Emma. I look forward to working with them and all returning Councillors and trust they will represent their Shareholders and the Council with diligence and integrity.”

Mr Brown also acknowledged the contribution of the Council’s retiring Councillors Alex Wright, Dirk Sieling, Graham Hallett, Greg Mitchell, Robin Barkla, and Lloyd McCallum, who is the only remaining inaugural member of the Council.

“When you witness the efforts that these Councillors have gone to on behalf of the Co-op, which most people never see, it is incredibly humbling and something I greatly appreciate.

“It speaks volumes about the individuals and their passion and commitment for their fellow Farmers and our industry.”

Mr Brown praised the efforts of Shareholders and thanked them for their participation in the elections process.

“The health of our Co-op rests with Shareholders and their willingness, as owners of Fonterra, to participate in the decision making processes.

“Fonterra Farmers value the principle of 100% ownership and control and it is important that they continue to demonstrate their commitment to this.”

Earlier in the elections process the following Shareholders’ Council candidates were elected unopposed:

Ward 3, Southern Northland: Tracey Bryan
Ward 5, Hauraki / Coromandel: Julie Pirie
Ward 8, Matamata: Grant Wills
Ward 9, Western Bay of Plenty: Murray Linton
Ward 13, Rotorua: Matt Pepper
Ward 15, Taupo: Phil Butler
Ward 19, Central Taranaki: Noel Caskey
Ward 25, Wairarapa: Philip Palmer
Ward 27, North Canterbury: Shaun Lissington
Ward 28, Rakaia: Angela Ward
Ward 29, Ashburton: Charles Whitehead
Ward 30, South Canterbury: John Gregan
Ward 31, Waitaki: Greg Kirkwood
Ward 32, Otago: Ad Bekkers
Ward 33, Northern Southland: Ivan Lines
Ward 34, Southern Southland: Emma Hammond
Ward 35, Western Southland: Vaughan Templeton

About the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council
The Fonterra Shareholders’ Council represents the interests of Fonterra Farmers to the Board of the Co-operative and plays an active role in monitoring and assessing the governance and performance of Fonterra. There are 35 Councillors who are all Shareholders elected by their fellow Farmers in wards across New Zealand.
