Certified Builders and the Wood Turners Guild raise the roof in Hawke’s Bay

From 14 November members of Certified Builders from the Hawke’s Bay region will take part in a community project over an extended weekend to replace the roof of the Scout Hall at Heretaunga Park, Hastings, which is to become the new home of the Hawke’s Bay Wood Turners Guild.

The dilapidated hall was purchased by the Wood Turners Guild earlier in the year. Since then, renovations have been largely undertaken by the skilled crafters of the Guild. However, the complex, and potentially costly, project of replacing the roof requires trade-qualified builders so the Guild approached Certified Builders for support.

Approximately 30 Certified Builders members, including some apprentices, will remove the existing roofing and replace within three days. Hawke’s Bay Wood Turners Guild members will be on-hand to provide help, as well as meals and refreshments for the builders.

Certified Builders Chief Executive, Grant Florence, said “It’s great that a building with a history as a Scout Hall will continue to be used by another community organisation such as the Hawke’s Bay Wood Turners Guild.

“Certified Builders is proud of the active role we play in communities all around New Zealand, and obviously there is a synergy between wood turners and builders, so we were delighted that the Wood Turners Guild approached us to help.

All the Certified Builders members involved are donating their time and services. The Certified Builders Hawke’s Bay Regional Committee is receiving donation for the job, which will go towards providing services for its members in the region – such as professional development – and supporting apprenticeships.

Certified Builders provides an Apprenticeship Scholarship Trust, which supports future builders who, in times of personal hardship, encounter obstacles that would prevent them from completing their apprenticeship.

Certified Builders believes apprenticeships are critical to New Zealand communities and the economy. It therefore supports apprentices in a variety of ways including through the Apprenticeship Scholarship Trust, as well as by working with apprenticeship schemes, and running an annual Apprentice Challenge around the country, which rewards apprentices who have excelled.

Approximately one-third of all builders in New Zealand, typically smaller building companies, are members of Certified Builders. A further third of all builders are not members of either of the two building trade associations in New Zealand. Certified Builders is the only trade association that requires its members to be trade qualified
