Yealands Family Wines Awarded Greatest Contribution to a
Sustainable New Zealand
Yealands Family Wines (YFW) has been named overall winner at the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards, held in Auckland last night. This is the supreme accolade and is awarded to a business that has performed outstandingly well in all aspects of sustainability. The Marlborough based company also won the Restorative Impact Award for their composting and heating programmes which result in a net positive environmental impact.
Founder and Principal of Yealands Family Wines, Peter Yealands was humbled to receive the overall award. “This award is a true honour, especially given the range of businesses nominated for the NSBN Awards in 2014. Each of these companies have been highly effective in making their vision of a sustainable business a reality and it is great to see environmental best practice at the core of business growth,” says Mr Yealands.
With a career spanning 50 years, and across multiple industries, Peter Yealands could be described as one of New Zealand’s most successful entrepreneurs. His personal mantra: “Think boldly, tread lightly and never say it can’t be done” has guided the development of the award winning sustainability initiatives at Yealands Estate winery.
CEO of the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) Rachel Brown says that this exemplary organization lead by a dedicated individual is leading the transformation to a more sustainable New Zealand. “Yealands Family Wines stood out to the judges because it innovates well across the entire business. It drives best practice, has consistent sustainability performance across all its operations and represents New Zealand well internationally” she says.
The Yealands Estate winery was the first in the world to be carboNZeroCertTM certified since inception, and is four times more energy efficient than the industry average. Their composting programme addresses an industry-wide landfill problem. While composting has been used by farmers for centuries, Yealands’ innovation comes from working beyond its vineyard boundaries to secure positive environmental impact. Partnerships with aquaculture, forestry and freezing works industries have driven compost production to more than 50,000 tonnes annually providing benefits to the wider Marlborough region.
