Jetstar will more than double its international Wellington services when it begins new flights to the capital from Melbourne in March 2015.
Last week the low fares airline celebrated its very first international services to Wellington when its inaugural flight from the Gold Coast touched down in the capital on Friday afternoon.
Grant Kerr, Jetstar head of New Zealand, said the popularity of that three times a week service had prompted the airline to move quickly to add another trans-Tasman destination.
“Wellingtonians have welcomed our new low fares from the capital to the Gold Coast so we’re delighted today to announce our first Wellington-Melbourne flights, which will add a second option for travel to Australia on Jetstar,” Mr Kerr said.
“We’ll be offering four flights a week on the new route with the first Wellington-Melbourne service scheduled for 30 March 2015, ahead of the Easter school holiday break.”
Mr Kerr said the new service would bring benefits on both sides of the Tasman.
“Today’s announcement is great news for Wellington tourism, offering a chance to leverage our low fares to boost the capital’s profile to Melbourne’s population of over four million residents,” Mr Kerr said.
“We’re also sure a low fares option will appeal to Wellingtonians keen to visit friends and family in Melbourne or spend a few days at leisure enjoying the shows, galleries, shopping and food scene for which the city is renowned.”
Mr Kerr said Jetstar had significantly expanded its trans-Tasman services over the past year and would continue to look for further opportunities. Since the start of last year the airline had added more than 20,000 seats to its Tasman network with increased services from Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown.
“With the New Zealand dollar predicted to stay at strong levels against the Aussie dollar over the next 12 months we’re confident more Kiwis than ever will be looking to take a trans-Tasman break in 2015,” Mr Kerr added.
The airline will fly four times a week Wellington-Melbourne on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday using a 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft in a single class.
