CentrePort proposal vote of confidence in region

CentrePort’s proposal to deepen the shipping channel so it can accept bigger ships is vital for the Wellington region, says Wellington Employers’ Chamber of Commerce President John Milford.

“It is critical that the region maintains its trade connections with international markets and continues to invest in growth.

“Wellington is a major freight and transport hub which stimulates many businesses and jobs in the region.

“This is a vote in favour of building on the region’s economic activities, it fits perfectly with investments the port has already made, and which others have made in roads and rail to create an efficient transport system in the lower North Island.

“Bigger ships are an emerging reality which we need to prepare for to ensure the region’s importers and exporters can remain competitive and grow. This in turn supports the everyday cost and standard of living for us all.

“It’s also positive to see CentrePort is consulting fully with the community on this project and that it intends to ensure environmental, social and cultural factors are taken into account.”
