Romantic Kiwis keen to pop the most difficult of questions

Given the one off opportunity to ask anyone they know anything, love-struck Kiwis would most likely ask their partner to marry them.

Ice cream brand Tip Top recently launched a competition which allowed entrants to put forward a question they wanted to see printed on an ice cream stick as part of its Yes Sticks campaign.

2,500 people responded with nearly all of them wanting to ask something of their partner or a loved one, with the most popular question being one of the most difficult – will you marry me.

Marriage proposals topped the list (10%) followed by questions on money, holidays, babies and pets.

“Whether it’s the time of year or there is just something in the ice cream, there are currently a lot of nervous romantics out there waiting to pop the question,” says Minna Reinikkala, Tip Top Group Marketing Manager.

“Interestingly, the majority of these are women and with 2016 being a leap year perhaps they are tired of waiting for their partner to propose and getting ready to embrace the old Irish tradition that invites women to propose.”

The Yes Sticks campaign invited people to submit a question they would like to have printed on a stick and placed in a Tip Top ice cream of their choice. From the entries, 27 lucky winners were picked and in a couple of weeks, they’ll receive their special Tip Top ice creams!

Nearly 2,500 people submitted a question with 89% asking something of their partner. Marriage proposals were the focus of 259 - 233 from women.

Next on the list was holiday requests, with more than 200 people wanting a trip of a lifetime with far away destinations such as Bali and Las Vegas proving popular.

Away from partner requests, 202 people (8%) wanted to ask something of their boss – either for a pay rise or for an extended holiday.

And as evidence of the current housing boom, 165 (6.5%) of respondents wanted to apply to the bank of mum and dad for a loan to help them onto the housing ladder and into their first home.

The Tip Top survey was conducted to test the recent findings of the London Institute of Psychiatry that showed eating ice cream lights up the pleasure centre in the brain and can improve productivity and day-to-day happiness.

Minna explains: “What’s most apparent is that despite all our individual differences our needs and wants are all broadly the same.

“We want to be loved, to be settled in a nice home with few money worries and able enjoy long holidays. The Yes Sticks campaign is about making those big decisions and saying ‘yes’ to the good things in life - and, of course, great ice cream!”

Tip Top is now conducting its own research to see if sharing an ice-cream before asking big questions results in more positive outcomes.
