Environmentally Responsible Asia-Pacific Airports Honored at Airport Carbon Accreditation Certificate Presentation Ceremony

[May 18, 2015 – Hong Kong] Four Asia-Pacific airports were honored at the 10th ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Assembly, held in April in Jordan as they were presented with Airport Carbon AccreditationCertificates to recognize their initiatives and achievements in carbon reduction.

Airports receiving certificates at the ceremony include:

Level 3, Optimization:

• Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, India

Level 2, Reduction:

• Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia

• Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan

Level 1, Mapping:

• Brisbane International Airport, Australia

In congratulating the accredited airports, Mrs. Patti Chau, Regional Director of ACI Asia-Pacific said, “Airport Carbon Accreditation was extended to the Asia-Pacific region in November 2011 from ACI Europe. By end of last year, it has become a global programme and is now available to airports in all 5 ACI regions. In Asia-Pacific 25 airports have already been accredited under the Programme. Iwish to congratulate these airports for their strong commitment in carbon emissions management and working towards carbon neutrality.”

Airport Carbon Accreditation is institutionally-endorsed by ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference) and EUROCONTROL (European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation) and is overseen by an independent Advisory Board including representatives of the European Commission, ECAC, EUROCONTROL, ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation), UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) and Manchester Metropolitan University. Independently administered by leading global sustainability consultancy WSP, it has established itself as the airport industry’s global standard for carbon management.

The 25 Asia-Pacific airports currently certified by the programme are as follows:

Level 2, Reduction: Kaohsiung International Airport, Chinese Taipei

Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia

Macau International Airport, Macau

Queen Alia International Airport, Jordan

Sunshine Coast Airport, Australia

Suvarnabumi Airport, Thailand

Level 1, Mapping: Abu Dhabi International Airport, United Arab Emirates

Al Maktoum International Airports, United Arab Emirates

These airports welcomed over 552 million passengers in 2013 according to ACI Annual World Airport Traffic Report, representing 23.6% of the total air passenger traffic in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East region.
