David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association says ‘After a flat May, the new vehicle market once again took off in June with 13,030 new vehicles registered, the strongest month of June on record and the 5th strongest month of all time. The previous highest single month was way back in August 1984 with 13,157 vehicles sold. The highest single month was in July 1984 with 13,983 vehicles registered. The market year to date is six percent up (3,435 vehicles) on this time last year.’
Toyota remained the overall market leader for the month of June with 23 percent (2,942 vehicles) followed by Holden with 11 percent (1,373 vehicles) and Ford with 10 percent (1,277 vehicles). Year to date Toyota, Holden and Ford remain the overall market leaders.
New passenger car registrations of 9021 vehicles in June were up 504 units on June 2014 sales of 8,517 vehicles. Toyota remains the market leader for passenger vehicles (2,171 vehicles/24 percent) followed by Holden (870 vehicles/10 percent) and Hyundai (773 vehicles/9 percent). Year to date, Toyota, Holden and Mazda remain the passenger vehicle market leaders. The top selling passenger model for the month of June was the Toyota Rav4 (613 vehicles) followed by the Toyota Highlander (489 vehicles) and the Toyota Corolla (436 vehicles). Registrations of the Rav4 and Highlander models were boosted by sales to rental companies for the month of June (430 and 379 vehicles respectively).
New commercial vehicle registrations of 4,009 vehicles in June were marginal up by 7 units on June 2014 sales of 4,002 vehicles. Ford displaced Toyota as the commercial vehicle leader for the month of June (811 vehicles/20 percent), however Toyota remains the market leader, followed by Ford and Holden.
The Ford Ranger remained the monthly top selling commercial vehicle model with 729 vehicles sold, followed by the Holden Colorado with 484 vehicles and Toyota Hilux with 481 vehicles. Year to date the Ranger remains the top selling commercial vehicle model with 16 percent market share (3,035 vehicles) followed by the Hilux with 13 percent market share (2,581 vehicles) and the Nissan Navara with 10 percent market share (1,884 vehicles).

Year to date the top selling models are the Ford Ranger (3,035 vehicles) followed by the Toyota Hilux (2,581 vehicles) and the Toyota Corolla (2,399 vehicles). Two more commercial vehicle models complete the top five year to date being the Nissan Navara (1,884 vehicles) and the Holden Colorado (1,806 vehicles).
Reflecting the trends above, the sales of sports utility vehicles remains the dominant vehicle segment increasing to 37 percent market share for the month of June and 33 percent year to date. The Pick-up/Chassis Cab segment continues to increase its market share with 24 percent for the month of June and 21 percent market share year to date. The small passenger vehicle segment remains the third biggest segment but slipped to 12 percent market share for the month of June and 14 percent year to date. This compares to 18 percent market share for the 2014 year.
‘The sales of new vehicles remains strong despite other economic indicators showing the economy may be flattening out. If the current rate of sales continues we could see new vehicle registrations break the 130,000 barrier for the first time’ said Mr Crawford.
