Skilled job vacancies fall slightly in July
The number of skilled job vacancies advertised online fell by 0.2 per cent in July, while there was a 2.7 per cent rise across the year, according to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) latest Jobs Online report.
The slight fall was driven by decreases in three industries, the largest of which was in information technology (down 3.2 per cent). The accounting, human resources, legal and administration industries saw a decrease of 0.7 per cent, while healthcare and medical fell by 0.5 per cent.
The decreases were partially offset by increases in hospitality and tourism (up 1.4 per cent) and construction and engineering (up 1.2 per cent).
Job vacancies in professional occupations fell 1.1 per cent in July, while the number of technician and trade worker positions increased by 1.3 per cent.
Of the 10 regions, six experienced an increase in skilled vacancies in July. The Bay of Plenty saw the largest increase (up 1.3 per cent), followed by Otago/Southland (0.8 per cent).Nelson/Tasman/Marlborough/West Coast had the biggest fall in skilled vacancies (down 1.6 per cent).
Skilled vacancies in Canterbury fell by 0.2 per cent in July, but grew by 1.5 per cent over the year. There was a slowing of growth in the construction sector slowed over the past month and year, as the Canterbury rebuild reached its peak.
MBIE’s Labour Market Trends Manager, David Paterson says, “There has been a slow-down in growth in some industries, like construction, over the past year, balanced by very strong long-term growth in hospitality and tourism.”
