Gold Discovery Centre named as a finalist in Design Awards

20 August 2015

Waihi's Gold Discovery Centre named as a finalist in NZ Best Design Awards.

The Discovery Centre is a highly interactive 'new-age' visitor experience based around Waihi's fascinating and captivating gold story.

The exhibition was designed by Locales of Wellington, and Locales’ Creative Director Chris Hay is delighted that the Centre has made the Best Design Awards finals (Spatial – Exhibition Installations and Temporary Structures category).

This is an outstanding result for us, and on the back of winning the recent Museums Aotearoa "Best Visitor Experience" award, it again confirms the high quality of the experience we offer our visitors. The category winners will be announced at the awards dinner in Auckland on Friday 9th October.

“Creating the Gold Discovery Centre was over three years of work, with almost every element of visitor experience design you can think of: spatial design; graphic design; computer games; animations; big mechanical interactives; tiny mechanical interactives and even the country’s first ever full-size Ghost Theatre! So it is a great reward for the team at Locales to be acknowledged for such a wide-ranging design project” says Chris.

This latest achievement comes directly off the back of their recent win in the New Zealand Museum Awards 2015 Service IQ for Best Museum Visitor Experience. This award was presented for an outstanding museum visitor experience that contributes to best practice in the museum sector in Aotearoa New Zealand, and demonstrates excellence, relevance and vision.
