Trade careers booming

Trade careers booming

“There’s no better time to consider trade training with plenty of trade opportunities,” says Pat Cody of Careers New Zealand.
“Right now there are an array of opportunities across a wide range of trades nationwide, from carpenters and plasterers to plumbers and engineers,” says Pat who is the Principal Advisor, Career Knowledge Hub at Careers New Zealand.

Got a Trade Week (21-28 August) has been designated by a consortium of seven Industry Training Organisations which collectively represent more than 100 industry sectors and 120,000 on-the-job learners. The week has been designed to celebrate the talents and achievements of young tradespeople and promote on-the-job training and apprenticeships to future tradies.

“A trade apprenticeship gives people a brilliant opportunity to earn while they learn – so they’re bypassing the student debt highway. Trades training also allows people to turn their passion into a career by having the opportunity to hone their craft through the right techniques and tools – be it carpentry, design, or cooking,” Pat says.

“Another bonus is tradespeople can travel with their practical skills, and many enjoy the challenge of becoming their own boss.”

People interested in a trade career can check out one or more of the 50 nationwide events happening as part of Got a Trade Week (gotatrade.co.nz). You can also find out more about workplace training and apprenticeships at careers.govt.nz/apprenticeships.
