DNC launches second .nz WHOIS consultation

Domain Name Commission launches second .nz WHOIS consultation

Media release – 17 November 2015

The Domain Name Commission (DNCL) has today launched its second public consultation on the .nz WHOIS – asking for the community’s views on what information should be displayed in the WHOIS and how.

Commonly referred to as a ‘domain name search,’ the WHOIS is the publicly available search service that lets people find registration information for a .nz domain name.

Today’s consultation follows an earlier public comment period and is an important part of the Commission’s two-stage review of the WHOIS, currently underway.

At present, a range of information is made available in the .nz WHOIS, including registrant, technical and admin contact details. DNCL is seeking comment on what information should be disclosed in response to a WHOIS search; who disclosures should be made to; and how information should be provided.

“The key question we’re asking for this second consultation is whether the current range of data provided for a WHOIS search should continue on the same basis as it is now,” says Domain Name Commissioner Debbie Monahan.

“If the WHOIS should work differently when it comes to what information is disclosed, we’re interested in hearing people's views on what an alternative approach might look like.”

A consultation paper has been produced and can be read at https://dnc.org.nz/whois-review. Submissions can made via email to policies@dnc.org.nz, or posted to P.O. Box 11 881, Wellington. The closing date for submissions is Friday, 29 January 2016.

As part of its consultation process, DNCL will also hold a number of evening time public meetings where interested parties can discuss the WHOIS review directly with representatives from the Commission.

The public meetings will be held in Christchurch on 23 November, Auckland on 24 November, Wellington on 26 November; each starting at 5:30pm. An online public meeting will also be held on 30 November at 5:30pm, for those unable to make the physical meetings. More information about the public meetings can be found at dnc.org.nz/online-meeting.
