Guiding organisations through the ‘new normal’

Guiding organisations through the ‘new normal’ the aim of award recipient

In an age of cyber threats, disruptive technology and digital innovation, guiding businesses through the ‘new normal’ is the focus for the Institute of Directors’ latest Emerging Director Award recipient.

A senior manager in Accenture and Chair of the Junior Rugby Board for the Wellington Rugby Football Union, Sunil Surujpal was recognised as a future talent in the boardroom in a ceremony at the Wellington Club last Institute of Directors Wellington Branch Chair Dr Helen Anderson says judges were impressed by Mr Surujpals clear leadership skills and dedication to best practice governance.

“Sunil stood out as someone with a deep and diverse skillset,” she said. “He recognises good governance as being the foundation of great organisations, and has a real drive to grow his capability as a director.”

Drawn to governance out of a desire to give back to the local community and the future of his children, he says the award will offer him the chance to meet and learn from experienced directors and see other boards in action.

“It’s apparent that good governance doesn’t just happen on its own. It takes hard work, dedication, and commitment to an organisation to deliver quality outcomes.

“The opportunities and the doors opened by this award will allow me to become a better director, able to provide more effective support for local community bodies and other organisations I take on in the future.”

With 15 years’ experience in industries as diverse as finance, the public sector and insurance, Mr Surujpal says he has a lot to offer as a technology leader.

“Businesses are being disrupted like never before by a range of factors including new competitors, the rate and pervasiveness of technological change, the changing external economic environment and increasing demands of customers.

“To survive, organisations will have to embrace new regulations, technologies, manage new risks and prepare for the future with robust planning. These challenges, often described as the ‘new normal’, mean strong effective governance is even more important to public and private sector organisations.”

The Emerging Director Award is designed to foster upcoming talent in governance through mentoring, practical experience, and formal governance training.

Mr Surujpal’s benefits will include mentoring from an experienced director, $2000 for professional development, and a one-year membership of the Institute of Directors.
