The vegans prevail – Z to launch first vegan pie

Sometimes competitions can throw up unexpected results and Z’s DIY Pie competition will see the company introduce its first ever vegan pie from 28 December.

In July, Z ran a competition as part of its annual ‘Pie Month’ asking people to submit and then vote on their own unique pie recipes. It received an overwhelming response, with almost 4,000 recipes submitted. The vegan community clearly noticed and, when the votes were tallied, four of the top five pies contained absolutely no animal products.

Z committed to choosing one of the top five pies to manufacture and sell at Z Espress stations. When the panel of judges reviewed the top five they decided the winning recipe should be that of ‘Gemma from Auckland’, pictured, for her Mexican vegan pie. The judges loved Gemma’s pie because of the depth of Mexican flavours and, while it caters to vegans, it’s so tasty it will appeal to a much broader range of customers. Gemma’s pie will be on sale at all Z Espress stations across New Zealand from 28 December – 24 January.

Z’s GM of Retail, Mark Forsyth, loves pies. He said while his favorite is the New York Pepper Steak, this pie tastes amazing and he’s looking forward to everyone getting a chance to try it.

“We just think this is an awesome thing to be offering our customers and we reckon it’s really cool the way people came together and voted for something they wanted to see at Z. This driving season we’re really stoked to be offering Gemma’s Mexican pie and encourage our customers to give it a go!”
