New Commercial Manager at Alexandra Park

New Commercial Manager at Alexandra Park

The appointment of Alexandra Park’s Commercial Manager, Byron Waring, reflects the Auckland Trotting Club’s broadening role as a major Auckland property enabler, says Alexandra Park chief executive, Dominique Dowding.

Last year’s appointment of a commercial manager occurred as 19 new commercial leases came to market and freehold apartments were being sold in Alexandra Park’s mixed-use urban village for 750 residents. At the same time The Blues Super 15 rugby franchise signed a long-term lease to build and operate their training base from the Park.

“Alexandra Park today is a serious commercial business with a lot of diversity within the portfolio that consists of businesses in sports and entertainment, hospitality and an extensive property portfolio including many long established tenants as well as the significant urban village development currently being constructed,” says Ms Dowding

“Appointing Byron Waring as our commercial manager reflects the sheer scale and importance of the role today. It’s great we’ve got someone of his experience as this role is much broader than your traditional CFO.”

Mr Waring is a chartered accountant who brings significant experience in delivering high quality financial management, financial control and compliance, and on-going improvement to business processes.

Prior to his recent appointment to Alexandra Park, he was Regional Controller & Business Manager for the global engineering firm URS NZ Limited and Group Finance Manager at Kordia. His career also took him to the UK for a number of years where he held senior financial controller and auditing roles. He has Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and a Graduate Diploma in Management from the University Of Auckland.

“I’m really enjoying the breadth and diversity of the role given it is effectively multiple businesses within a business. This makes the role all the more challenging as there are so many different facets to deal with from your traditional racing product through to food and beverage, entertainment, property leasing and the property development. That breadth is what really attracted me to the role. Also the opportunity to work with an inspirational and driven CEO like Dominique was something not to be passed up on,” says Byron Waring.

He says priorities include ensuring ongoing information technology improvements help staff with workloads and positively support the business; delivery of timely and relevant business performance information to the management team and the board; as well as preparing the organisation’s systems, people and processes to cope with a significantly larger organisation when the development is completed.

“It has been a whirlwind few months but it’s such a positive place with a clear vision for its future. Alexandra Park has so much going on in a commercial sense but at the same time it’s an incorporated society with its own elected board and wider membership group. It’s great to be part of such an Auckland institution that does extremely well balancing its club and commercial responsibilities on a daily basis” says Mr Waring.
