Love is in the air on Valentine’s Day

Love is in the air on Valentine’s Day

Auckland, Monday 15 February 2016:

Florists love Valentine’s day and the reason is obvious – a massive hike in sales over the weekend prior means Valentine’s Day is an essential component in the sales cycle.

But other sectors also benefit from a boost – movies, beauty and hairdressing and jewellery retailing all saw double digit growth in spending through the Paymark network over the weekend prior. Even the old stand-by (going out for dinner) sees a healthy lift in terms of dollars spent over the weekend before.

And despite Valentine’s Day itself being on a Sunday, there was a marked lift in terms of gift buying on the day itself.

Chief Marketing Officer Tim McFarlane says the figures show a good weekend for romance-related sectors.

“Overall, Valentine’s Day saw sales through Paymark’s network lift by 5.3% over the prior weekend but whether that is influenced by the long weekend, the weather, or romance remaining alive and kicking isn’t something we can determine,” says Tim.
