New Zealand Job Market Strengthens

MEDIA RELEASE

Wednesday 20 April 2016

New Zealand Job Market Strengthens

Across New Zealand new job ads jumped 6.1 per cent in March, leaving the country in a good state with 5.2 per cent more job ads than 12 months ago.

The construction and the property industries are helping grow the Kiwi job market with strong demand for labour in these sectors.

• Job ads for New Zealand Construction jobs on SEEK saw a year-on-year (March 2015/2016) increase of 19 per cent.

• Job ads for New Zealand Real Estate and Property jobs on SEEK saw a year-on-year (March 2015/2016) increase of 18 per cent.

SEEK General Manager Janet Faulding said that it is likely that New Zealand’s strong net migration figures are contributing to the pressure on the real estate and property market.

“We have seen strong growth over a sustained period for the Construction and Real Estate industries, which is being further fuelled by the strong population growth across the country,” Ms Faulding said.

Jobs advertised across these thriving classifications are broad ranging – from surveyor to project management positions for Construction; and body corporate to commercial sales and leasing roles for the Real Estate and Property sector.

“When we look at the year-on-year job ad results by city, the Auckland market mirrors the national trend, with Construction and Real Estate jobs being among the top performers,” Ms Faulding commented.

• Job ads for Auckland construction jobs on SEEK had a year-on-year (March 2015/2016) increase of 31 per cent.

• Job ads for Auckland real estate and property jobs on SEEK had a year-on-year (March 2015/2016) increase of 27 per cent.

“In Wellington, the best performing classification for March was Insurance and Superannuation, with 131 per cent more jobs advertised than 12 months ago.

“Whereas, in Canterbury, CEO and General Management was the top sector, with 60 per cent more job ads posted on SEEK this March in comparison to the same time last year,” continued Ms Faulding.

With the SEEK March data showing the strength of the Construction and Real Estate industries across the country, particularly in Auckland, this could also be contributing to the slight tightening in the supply of labour.

“With increasing demand for professionals in the Construction and Real Estate sectors, the focus for employers will be on how to attract and retain the best people to remain competitive,” Ms Faulding added.
