Countdown Begins to ‘Capital Express’ Service

Countdown Begins to ‘Capital Express’ Service

Today marks 100 days until the first Singapore Airlines ‘Capital Express’ service lands at Wellington International Airport.

The new service, which for the first time will connect Wellington to the world, is scheduled to arrive in Wellington on Wednesday 21 September. To mark the 100 day countdown, Singapore Airlines has teamed up with Wellington International Airport and Canberra Airport to display a ‘countdown’ clock in the respective terminals as anticipation builds towards the inaugural flights.

Singapore Airlines’ General Manager New Zealand, Mr Simon Turcotte, said today’s milestone was another exciting step towards the new service beginning.

“A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes since we announced our decision to fly to Wellington in January,” Mr Turcotte said.

“We have been actively recruiting for our new office in Wellington as well as working closely with our partners at Wellington International Airport to ensure everything is ready for our arrival in September.

“Our team has been working around the clock to get everything ready for 21 September and while we are now just 100 days away from the arrival of the ‘Capital Express’ we are confident and also very excited about the potential of the new route.”

“Since we announced the new route in January we have been very encouraged by the number of people who have already purchased their tickets.

“Bookings to our global network continue to grow at a positive pace.”

The countdown clock will display images of Singapore, Canberra and Wellington along with the number of days until the arrival of SQ291 from Singapore, via Canberra. The countdown clock will be projected on screens near the check-in counters at Wellington International Airport.

Mr Turcotte said it was exciting to see just how much was on offer to those wanting to travel from Wellington and the surrounding regions.

“These flights will allow people to travel from Wellington to almost 100 destinations across 60 countries on the Singapore Airlines and SilkAir networks with greater convenience,” Mr Turcotte said.

“They will also provide the opportunity to explore New Zealand’s closest neighbor where there is a wealth of excitement to enjoy just three hours away.

“It is exciting to think that what used to take at least seven hours will, from 21 September, take just three hours, which opens up the possibility of long weekends in Australia’s ‘coolest little’ capital.”

In conjunction with the 100 day countdown, VisitCanberra has released a list of 100 things to do in the Australian capital.
