New Asbestos Division - A Result of Changes to Regulations

Media Release Updated 4 July 2016

New Asbestos Division Reflects Dedication to Health and Safety

Christchurch based Waghorn Builders has added a new asbestos division to its company.

Managing Director Luke Waghorn says the construction environment in Christchurch combined with new regulations which came into force on April 4 this year, demanded that Waghorn’s make changes.

“I don’t know if many people realise but asbestos is New Zealand’s number one killer in the workplace. Around 170 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases. In Canterbury we are at a particularly high level of risk of exposure to asbestos because of the amount of demolition and repair of residential buildings following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes,” he says.

Managing Director and Operations Manager for the business, Jake Waghorn, says although there is no legal obligation to hold a licence for the removal of asbestos until 5 April 2018, Waghorn asbestos removals are one of the two South Island based companies that hold licence the class A licence for removal of asbestos.

Jake and his twin brother Luke are absolutely focused on ‘best practice’ and the safety of staff and members of the public, another reason for this recent addition to Waghorn’s.
