Six teenagers are heading to San Francisco after competing in the Young Enterprise Trust annual event, Enterprise in Action. The event, which was held over the weekend, is designed to nurture entrepreneurship among youth and provide students with access to global trade knowledge.
Enterprise in Action was only open to students taking part in The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. Eighty students from around New Zealand took part in the weekend-long business challenge and were required to complete a number of challenges including developing market entry strategy plans. The students had to use their business knowledge to develop creative solutions for two team challenges, which included developing strategic business plans and presenting to a panel of judges. Six students won the individual competition to form ‘Team New Zealand’.
The six students who will make up
“Team New Zealand” are:
· Andrew Tang –
Scots College, Wellington
· Leah McGrath – Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Manawatu
· Nina Griffiths – Kaitaia College, Northland
· Tim Marshall – St Thomas of Canterbury College, Canterbury
· Thomas Goodin – Westlake Boys’ High School, Auckland
· Zachary Monk – Western Springs College, Auckland
The trip to San Francisco
for the six winners is sponsored by FedEx Express, the
world’s largest express transportation company, and Air
New Zealand. They will spend five days in San Francisco and
hope to visit some of Silicon Valley’s leading businesses
including Google, Facebook, Tesla and AirBnB. They will also
visit the FedEx hub in Oakland to gain a better
understanding of the logistics, transportation and
e-commerce industry.
“These six students stood out throughout the weekend,” says Young Enterprise CEO Terry Shubkin. “They were nominated for the trip by their peers and really impressed our judging panel.”
“These
students really impressed us with their ability to think
strategically under such daunting pressures,” said
Dianella Ngakuru, NZ Country Manager for FedEx Express.
Ngakuru was part of the judging panel for the final
challenge.
