A sustainable construction sector provides career certainty

NZIOB says a sustainable construction sector provides career certainty

The New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) has welcomed the release of the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) sponsored ‘National Construction Pipeline Report 2016’ saying that its forecasts largely dispel perceptions that the industry is cyclical, not sustainable and doesn’t provide career certainty.

NZIOB chief executive Malcolm Fleming said, “The Construction Pipeline Report forecasts construction activity of over $30 billion per annum for the foreseeable future, implying a very positive future for building and construction in this country.”

The report provides a bell curve of the sector’s forecasted $274 billion workload for the period 2014 to 2021. With each report, the decline from the forecasted 2017 peak becomes flatter, and shows a longer spread of activity and an overall increase in forecast building and construction.

“This report presents an industry that has great certainty, and one that is not likely to be subject to the boom and bust cycles of the past. The steady growth forecast in the report will create job security for those entering the industry.

“Construction has always been technically complex, provided incredible camaraderie and rewarding collaboration. It is now technology rich, sustainable, and well paid. SEEK, the online job listing provider, announced in May that construction is the ‘sector’ with the highest average advertised salary.”

As an advocate for the sector the NZIOB recently collaborated with Careers NZ to showcase construction to Career Advisers from 24 Auckland schools. Attendees heard the personal journeys of twelve young industry practitioners, who represented contractors, design professionals, and suppliers. The speakers provided a wonderful snap-shot of the roles that are available within the construction sector.

“Regardless of whether the speaker had a construction related degree or had progressed through the apprenticeship route, all practitioners spoke of their love of the industry, and the joy of working in a fast-paced, collaborative industry in which no day is the same,” Malcolm Fleming said.
