Olympic medallists stamp their mark

5 August 2016

Olympic medallists stamp their mark

New Zealand Post will be working through the night to produce stamps celebrating the success of our Olympic athletes in Rio.

Every time New Zealand wins a medal, be it gold, silver or bronze, a special sheet of six stamps will be printed featuring images of the medal winners.

“Our athletes are inspirational and we want to recognise their achievements on the world stage,” says Head of Stamps and Coins, Simon Allison.

“We’ll be doing a bit of sprinting ourselves, and these limited edition stamps will be available to order through the New Zealand Post website shortly after the event,” says Simon Allison.

“We’ll get gold medallist stamps to selected PostShops the next working day, but while a range of stamps will be available in selected PostShops, to avoid disappointment, we advise people to order the stamps online at nzpost.co.nz/roadtorio,” says Simon Allison.

The medallist stamps are part of a series of collectable stamps and coins produced for Rio 2016 depicting the journey of New Zealand’s Olympic athletes, from training in the New Zealand landscape to their ultimate destination of Rio. The series features elements of NZOC’s “Be the inspiration” ribbon as well as ten icons representing the sports in which New Zealand has previously won gold medals.

The series includes limited edition gold and silver coins, with only 250 1/2oz gold proof coins and 2,016 silver proof coins produced. New Zealand Post has also released a sheet of ten $1 stamps celebrating the Road to Rio.

The limited edition gold and silver coins and ‘Road to Rio’ stamps are already available to order online at nzpost.co.nz/roadtorio.
