Unison Wins National Line Mechanic Competition Two Years Running
Tuesday 25 October 2016 - Unison’s Line Mechanics have been judged the best in the country yet again, with the Hawke’s Bay team winning the national title for the second year in a row at the Connexis Line Mechanic Competition.
The three-day competition, held at Wigram in Christchurch, forms part of the electricity supply industry’s national conference. Crews from around New Zealand were challenged to test their skills, knowledge, and team work in a series of tasks performed as part of their role as Line Mechanics.
Unison’s crew were under added pressure this year being the current champions, but they handled this admirably. They were judged on the quality, speed, and safety with which they performed tasks, and were also assessed on their first aid skills in a mock accident scenario.
“Two win the national title two years in a row is an excellent achievement for our team, and we are very proud of them,” said Unison Chief Executive Officer, Ken Sutherland.
“It’s a real testament to their dedication, and it highlights that our crews are trained to the highest standard, and are focused on delivery of quality electrical services to our customers.”
The team were absolutely thrilled with the result, especially given the higher standard of competition this year.
“Last year’s win was a career highlight for all of us, and we were certainly going into this year’s competition with the intention of retaining the trophy, said Team Foreman, Regan Walker.
“Whilst we had an idea of what to expect this time around, it’s still a high pressure environment and there were some really strong teams competing. We just focussed on working together as a team, with clear communication and areas of responsibility.”
The team all agreed the training and preparation for the event flowed through into their day-to-day work.
“You really analyse how you do things at these events, and it gives you a chance to look at how other companies carry out the same task.
“As with last year, we learnt a lot in this year’s competition, and it’s great to be able to bring back to knowledge to the wider team, to help improve the electrical services we provide to customers.”
