FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Following the recent 7.8 magnitude earthquake, Kaibosh Food Rescue has been evacuated from its Wellington City premises but is still providing fresh food to Wellingtonians in need.
Since Wednesday’s evacuation of 25 Tennyson Street, Kaibosh has been operating from the Wellington City Mission. The City Mission has generously lent Kaibosh much-needed space for sorting and packing the quality surplus food they rescue from local businesses, which they then provide free of charge to community groups supporting people in need.
As a seven day a week service providing food to over 50 community groups across its Wellington and Lower Hutt branches, Kaibosh’s continued operation is vital as the region works to recover from earthquakes and flooding.
While operating from a temporary premises has its challenges, Kaibosh General Manager Matt Dagger is optimistic about Kaibosh’s future.
“Just last month we provided more than 20 tonnes of fresh, healthy food across the Wellington Region, and our service is needed now more than ever. The generosity of people in our community has always been a huge part of what makes Kaibosh work and we know that support will continue to be there for us at this difficult time.”
Kaibosh’s Wellington City volunteer programme – which numbers over 85 regular volunteers – is currently on hold but will be up and running again as soon as possible.
Kaibosh’s Lower Hutt branch continues to operate, and is dealing with much higher volumes of food than usual as supermarkets donate large amounts of surplus stock following the events of the last few days. Much of this food is being directed to local marae and welfare centres as they provide support for evacuees.
