BIANZ (Baking Industry Association of New Zealand) has been around 50 years next year - and every Christmas runs the Great NZ Christmas Mince Pie competition which is open to any bakery from around New Zealand. This year we also launched the Celebrity Christmas Mince Pie Charity Auction the proceeds of which are going to the Salvation Army.
The competition this year saw entries came in from Auckland to Dunedin. Entry is six of the same Christmas mince pies with a sweet pastry base, fruit mince filling and topping of the baker’s choice' allowing each competitor to demonstrate their own creative and innovative flair.
Judges were Mat Keys from Farmers Mill, Steve Adams from Rustic Café (in Lincoln), Dave Bradley - Bakery Tutor from ARA Institute of Canterbury, with the chief judge being Kevin Gilbert (Gilbert’s Fine Food in Dunedin and the current BIANZ President).
The
winner receives a package that includes the much-coveted
trophy + certificate presented by the President Kevin
Gilbert at their bakery, an article in Slice magazine, New
Zealand’s only bakery, cafe, catering magazine, and a
media
pack.
