Splish splash safely this summer
New Zealanders love to make a splash but play safely with inflatable swimming pools and toys, is the message this summer from Trading Standards.
“Inflatable swimming pools and buoyancy toys are favourites to adorn the backyard with over summer, but they are not designed to keep children safe in water,” says MBIE Trading Standards Principal Advisor Martin Rushton.
“The inflatable pool might just be for wading, paddling and splashing about, but check the depth - if the pool is 400mm or deeper it must be fenced and comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act.
“Inflatable toys and swimming aids, such as water wings, also carry risks. They can help support a child in the water while they learn how to swim, but should not be relied upon to keep your child safe - children still need supervision at all times while in the water.
“If you’re heading out this weekend to stock up on the inflatables, consider a few key safety requirements before you buy to ensure you understand the risks associated with the product. The packaging information will tell you the safe age range for toy use, the depth of a pool, and whether the product complies with New Zealand flotation aid safety standards.
“Make water safety a priority for you and your family this Christmas,” Mr Rushton says.
Everything you need to know before you buy inflatable pools and toys this summer, including how to use water toys safely, is detailed on the Consumer Protection Keeping Kids Safe website.
