City & Guilds Scholarship For Our Future Star

Students at WelTec’s Wellington Trades Academy in Hospitality have had a fantastic year of learning the basic skills in Front of House, Bakery and Cookery. For one student, Debbie Martin, this year just got even greater!

Debbie was presented a huge cheque, almost bigger than her, for a $1,000 City & Guilds Scholarship. This will enable Debbie to study on one of WelTec’s City & Guilds International approved courses.

City & Guilds Regional Manager for the Pacific, Glenn Fulcher said ‘Debbie participated in our ‘Trades Academy Challenge’ where Secondary School Students from across the country were encouraged to post selfie type photos of the work they have been doing during their trade experience in tertiary learning. The City & Guilds staff loved reviewing the photos from all the students and were amazed by some of the things they were producing.’

Trades Academy Students are still enrolled with their secondary school, however they are lucky enough to spend, on average, 2 days a week at a local Tertiary Trades Academy. ‘This is a brilliant opportunity for kids to stay at school, continue to work hard on some of the key subjects and experience some of the great trades on offer at their local training provider’ said Glenn.

Ben Shadbolt, Head of School for Hospitality & Tourism, said ‘WelTec run Trades Academy Courses across selected trade fields and our team in the Hospitality School offer Hospitality taster skills with credits for the students end of year NCEA results. These real industry skills allow the students to make informed decision for their future careers.’

Debbie intends to use her City & Guilds Scholarship to enrol on a full time course at WelTec in 2018 and is likely to study both Cookery and Bakery. Her Chef Tutor, Toby Sanderson, supported Debbie’s application for the City & Guilds Scholarship saying;

‘Debbie’s diligence, ability and hunger to learn saw her chosen as one of 3 students to be part of a culinary competition team, competing in the National final of the NSSCC (National Secondary Schools Culinary Competition). While she was unable to travel to Auckland with the team, she demonstrated flexibility, excellent skills and the ability to learn quickly, and gained invaluable experience from the preparations and training. We look forward to having Debbie attending full time classes next year.’

Although Debbie wondered how she was going to get the cheque home on the bus, she was over the moon to receive a $1,000 to help towards her course related cost and the opportunity to gain a City & Guilds International Qualification that will open doors across the world.
