Transpower announces transmission industry STAR Awards
Transpower today announced details for the transmission industry’s 2018 STAR Awards. The STAR Awards recognise achievement and excellence in safety in the electricity transmission industry, and winners are held in the highest regard by their peers.
The STAR Awards are open to all companies and individuals working on the New Zealand National Grid high voltage transmission system. Award categories, selection criteria, nomination information and the panel of independent judges have been announced today, along with details about the prestigious Awards Dinner, which will be held in Hamilton in November.
“We encourage those who have undertaken Transpower work to recognise the efforts of their colleagues and peers by nominating those who make important contributions to safety,” said Transpower Chief Executive Alison Andrew. “A job is only done well when it is done safely, and we know those who demonstrate leadership in this area are found at all levels and all roles of an organisation – not just at the top.”
A new category for 2018 is the STAR Award for Best Wellbeing Initiative, recognising an increased importance on worker health, as well as safety. “Many of our contracting companies have made impressive strides in this area, supporting workers in diverse ways in terms of wellbeing. We are encouraged that this is seen as an important dimension of worker safety, and therefore have created a new Award category,” commented Andrew.
She continued, “Keeping our mates safe at work is a collective mandate, and we look forward to celebrating the achievements of individuals and teams at our Awards Dinner later in 2018.”
The panel of independent judges for 2018 comprises Francois Barton, Executive Director of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum, Kate McKenzie, Chief Executive of Chorus, and Mark Cairns, Chief Executive of the Port of Tauranga.
Barton, who was also a judge in 2016, expressed his enthusiasm for the industry awards. “The STAR Awards are such an important opportunity to acknowledge the innovative and compelling efforts of businesses and workers in this field,” he said. “Health and safety is all too often connected with injuries, harm or failure. That’s why it is so positive to have these Awards so we can focus on what is going right in health and safety. The awards are a real indicator that we’re making progress both as a sector and a country.”
The biennial STAR Awards are part of Transpower’s continued focus on strong safety leadership in the transmission industry. Begun in 2012, the STAR Awards initiative has become a key feature in Transpower’s calendar.
