Sewing a Sustainable World One Bag at a Time

Boomerang Bags Dominion Road – Sewing a Sustainable World One Bag at a Time!

Plastic Bags are destroying our environment. Animals are eating them for lunch and recycling is a waste of time. We have a planet to save for future generations. While the Government are saying they will tackle the issue in due course community groups are providing the solution themselves and are raising awareness about plastic use in our everyday lives along the way.

Boomerang Bags have a nationwide day of sewing action happening on the 7th July from Cape Reinga to Bluff to address our countries’ plastic bag problem. Boomerang Bag communities through the country are gathering together to sew up a giant amount of bags from recycled fabric – 1000 in one day! We need media coverage of our efforts to continue to raise awareness about single use plastic bags. We would make a fantastic story and can promise lots of volunteers, busy sewing machines and big smiles.

- Boomerang Bags Dominion Road are an Eco-Neighbourhood group in Auckland. Eco-neighbourhoods is a Albert-Eden Local Board project that funds community groups to make sustainable change from a grassroots perspective.
- Boomerang bags originated from Australia and is going global. It is a grassroots community driven movement where groups get together and divert fabric from landfill by making reusable fabric bags that are given away for free for people to use again and again.
- The Dominion Road group has been around for 9 months and they have just made their 500th Bag. They have also involved over a 100 people in their project in the process and are targeting Dominion Road, a busy shopping area. They have also launched the “Take your own Take away container’ campaign in this area too! Everyone volunteers their time to make our world a wee bit of a better place.

Boomerang Bags faces our throw away mentality straight on tackling this big issue in a practical way that doesn’t wait for Government to act but takes change into their own hands. Boomerang Bags are changing the world one community, needle and thread at a time!
