A strong start to the awards season for Villa Maria

Living up to the reputation as New Zealand’s most awarded winery, Villa Maria is off to an impressive start in the 2019 awards season with a total of 17 gold medals from both the New Zealand International Wine Show and Hawkes Bay Wine Awards.

The gold medals adorn Villa Maria wines from Auckland, Marlborough and Hawkes Bay, across all tiers of the family-owned winery’s portfolio. Villa Maria’s Company Viticulturist Oliver Powrie said the result from these awards shows are a great representation of the hard work put in by the viticulture and winemaking teams. “After months of hard work during harvest followed by winter pruning and world-class vineyard management, these results are great recognition for all the effort and expertise both our viticulture and winemaking teams put in throughout the year,” he said.

“We are always thrilled when our determination to produce the best wines possible is awarded with gold medals. The team couldn’t be happier with the results so far and we are all looking forward to seeing how the rest of the awards season unfolds.”

With an unrelenting commitment to quality Villa Maria has been New Zealand’s most awarded winery for almost 40 years.

Editors’ notes:
The New Zealand International Wine Show is the largest wine competition in the country. Over 2,000 wines were entered this year with a total of 257 gold medals awarded. While this result may appear generous, almost 600 wines were not awarded any medal at all.
