Retail NZ Welcomes Proposals on Vaping

Retail NZ Welcomes Proposals on Vaping And Smokeless Tobacco Products

Retail NZ has welcomed an announcement by Associate Health Minister Jenny Salesa that the Government will be reviewing the regulation of vaping and smokefree tobacco products as part of the drive towards a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025.

"The proposals are a step towards risk-proportionate regulation. They will set standards and help smokers start using products that are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes. This means that retailers will be able to sell these products with greater confidence that they are both legal and safer. It is particularly good news for small dairies and convenience stores which are often heavily reliant on cashflow from the sale of tobacco products, and who will now be better positioned to help the Government achieve its goal of a Smokefree Aotearoa by 2025.

"There is detail to work through, and Retail NZ will be interested to see the Government's draft legislation when it is available."
