Philip Morris welcomes government’s plan to support smokers switch to less harmful alternatives

AUCKLAND - Philip Morris New Zealand (PMNZ) welcomes today’s announcement by the New Zealand Government that smokeless tobacco products are a far better alternative for smokers and will play a vital role in achieving this country’s smoke-free goals.

PMNZ General Manager, James Williams, said: “We welcome Associate Minister of Health Jenny Salesa’s acknowledgment that vaping is a significantly less harmful alternative to smoking, as proven by the overwhelming body of scientific evidence, and smokers need to have better access to publicly available information.”

“I echo Minister Salesa’s words that today’s announcement to appropriately regulate e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products represent a big step towards achieving a smoke-free New Zealand by 2025.”

“New Zealand has joined the likes of the United Kingdom in appropriately regulating smokeless tobacco products so that smokers are able to make an informed decision in switching to less harmful products when compared to cigarettes.”

“We look forward to contributing throughout the consultation process announced today as we continue our efforts to transition our business in New Zealand to a future without cigarettes.”
