Bauer Media scoops 24 finalist places at Voyager awards
Bauer Media’s brands have been recognised for
their high calibre of journalism and design in the 2019
Voyager Media Awards. Twenty-four finalists have been
selected from the Bauer Media portfolio across 16 award
categories.
North & South is a finalist for eight awards in six categories including best magazine cover and Magazine of the Year. The title also has finalists in both Feature Writer of the Year categories, with deputy editor, Joanne Wane in the running for the short-form Feature Writer of the Year award for her portfolio, which includes stories on New Zealand’s youngest school principal and how an Auckland female fight club took a stand on suicide.
Writer, Donna Chisholm represents North & South and New Zealand Listener for her long-form works, including “Gone Girl”, a piece on the new information that emerged 30 years after 17-year-old Joanne Chatfield vanished in Auckland.
North & South is well-represented in the best first-person essay or feature category, with Michelle Langstone’s “A View from Inside”, Daniel Luff’s “In a Scorched Room”, and John Summers’ “The House that Norm Built” all earning finalist places.
Also vying for Magazine of the Year is New Zealand Listener, nominated for 10 awards in nine categories, including Cartoonist of the Year, Reviewer of the Year, and Opinion Writer of the Year.
Veronika Meduna’s New Zealand Listener pieces on agriculture and climate change, and on the global plastic emergency have earned her a place in the Environmental / Sustainability Award category.
The title is also a finalist in the Science and Technology category for Kate Evans’ story on New Zealand’s ability to solve complex problems in the face of climate change, fake news, and developing technology.
HOME, Metro, New Zealand Listener, and North & South are all in contention for the best cover award.
Metro is also up for three other awards in the best arts, entertainment and/or lifestyle portfolio and best artwork/graphics categories.
“We are proud of the quality of journalism and design in our stable,” says managing director, Brendon Hill. “It’s a pleasure to lead a business which is breaking new ground on many fronts without losing sight of the integrity of our brands. It takes a lot of perseverance and hard work to be at the forefront of the industry and it brings me pleasure to see this recognised at the Voyagers.”
The Voyager Media Awards is one of the most prestigious and highly regarded events on the New Zealand media calendar. They are held annually to encourage, showcase and acknowledge the best of New Zealand’s newspapers, magazines, news including TV and radio and websites, and the work of reporters, feature writers, columnists, cartoonists, reviewers, photographers and videographers.
