Meridian Energy welcomes Zero Carbon Bill

Meridian Energy welcomes the introduction of the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill to Parliament as a milestone step in New Zealand’s climate change leadership.

Chief Executive Neal Barclay says the Bill will give business and industry the certainty they need to plan for the transition to net zero carbon emissions in New Zealand.

“This is fantastic news for all New Zealanders who are keen for real action and progress on climate change. Industry and business have been asking the Government for certainty so they can plan and invest for an economy driven by renewable energy, and this Bill will deliver that certainty.

“There are significant opportunities for Kiwis to prosper and grow in a zero carbon future, from clean energy jobs to new economic activity generated as sectors such as transport are converted from fossil fuels to electricity.”

Barclay says the bill also sends a strong global signal that New Zealand continues to be a world leader in tackling climate change.

“Climate change is happening now. It is affecting our native ecosystems, our agriculture and other climate-sensitive industries. It is the greatest challenge of our era and it’s hugely encouraging to see New Zealand leading the way once again.”

Barclay says Meridian Energy is looking forward to engaging with the detail of the Bill through the Select Committee process.

“Congratulations to our MPs who have had the political will and the courage to bring this Bill to Parliament. Meridian stands with the thousands of young Kiwis, businesses and individuals who are ready and excited to make a net carbon zero New Zealand a reality.”
