When Brandon Teena (Hilary Swank)
arrived in the rural community of Fall City, Nebraska, he
immediately enchanted the inhabitants of the small rural
community with his innocence and charm. But Brandon wasn't
who he appeared to be. Seventy-five miles away, in his
hometown of Lincoln, he had left behind a personal crisis
involving his new love, Lana (Chloe Sevigny), and her
reckless friend John (Peter Sarsgaard). As directory/writer
Kimberly Peirce explains, Boys Don't Cry is a story about
identity: "Brandon unwittingly provided not only a sense of
adventure and possibility in a place where there was very
little, he instilled a sense that you could go ahead and
live out your dreams," says Peirce. "Yet, when his assumed
identity unraveled, this kid who had at first appeared
simply harmless and eager to please, became entirely
threatening. The story had classic mythic elements. The
trick was uncovering the underlying emotional truth and
figuring out how to tell it."
The Cider House Rules is the
latest film from director Lasse Hallestrom who brought us
My Life As A Dog, What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and
Something To Talk About. Based on the acclaimed novel by
John Irving (who also wrote the screenplay), the film is a
coming-of-age tale that follows the journey of Homer Wells,
an orphan. Although he has no family, Homer has never
wanted for affection, thanks to the loving attention of Dr
Wilbur Larch of the St. Cloud's orphanage. However, as
Homer approaches manhood, he starts to question Dr. Larch's
methods. Eager to explore the world for himself, he leaves
St Cloud's and discovers adventure, friendships, danger and
betrayal.
