MERGER CANNED
Time Warner and Sony will not go through with a mooted merger. Instead, the music giants will form a strategic alliance for music sales and delivery over the Internet. Online retailer CDNow will remain an independent company under the deal, instead of merging with Sony's Columbia House and Time Warner's online music operations as proposed last July. CDNow Chief Executive Jason Olim was "obviously disappointed" that the merger wouldn't happen, but called the termination "the best move for CDNow and its shareholders." Really? The company's stock dropped 15% in trading.

Cobain's former wife, singer- cum-actress Courtney Love, took the no. 8 slot. Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays and the late Keith Moon of The Who took out the no. 2 and no. 3 spots respectively. McCartney, who recently admitted he and one-legged model Heather Mills are "an item", still only makes no. 41 on the overall list of 1000, ahead of runner-up musical millionaire Andrew Lloyd-Webber, with a reported wealth of 420 million pound. New to the list - at 914 - is Ozzy Osbourne, alongside veterans Sir Elton John, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Phil Collins and Sting.
