PEPSISMOKEFREEROCKQUEST
2000
It looks like Pepsismokefreerockquest 2K-style is
going to be bigger than ever before, as organisers report a
record 571 entries already received. This year New Zealand's
leading youth music event will feature 15 bands from
Gisborne's Ilminster Intermediate, a record number of bands
from one school. The program includes the Smokefree Pacifica
Beats Award, which has also attracted a record number of
entries, and, for the first time, the Smokefree Media
Awards, open to students who review, photograph, video or
otherwise record the goings-on at any Smokefree youth
event.
Organisers say "this level of participation indicates that New Zealand youth are becoming more and more attracted to music making, and view Pepsismokefreerockquest as an essential event in the school and industry calendar". The high-school tune-fest kicks off in Lower Hutt on May 18, and concludes with the Pacifica Beats Final in Wellington on August 25 and the National Pepsismokefreerockquest Final in Auckland on September 23.

delivered by four apostles of the Jamaican arts.
DOPE POPE
IN CONCERT
Lou Reed and Pope John Paul II will be getting
down together for The Grand Jubilee Concert for a Debt-Free
World, to be held May 1 at Rome University in Italy. Variety
Magazine reports that rocking Reed and pontificating Paul
will be joined by the Eurythmics and blind opera star Andrea
Bocelli, with other invitations still awaiting response. The
pope will address (and serenade?) the live and television
audience about the problem of international debt in
Third-world countries.
