THEY'RE BREWING THEIR BEER... HERE

Stella Artois. Made in Belgium... and New Zealand. That's what we can expect to hear on Wednesday at a Lion Nathan tasting session for visiting officials of Interbrew, the company who brew Stella Artois. The premium Belgian lager is currently imported into New Zealand - but in a tribute to local skills, the beer will soon be brewing here.

PARTY AT KELLY... WHO'S?

Party at Kelly Browne's, anyone? The party has turned into a bit of a scrap for insurance company AMI, who created the Kelly Browne character in their highly successful 1998 ad campaign, based around the idea that parents don't know what their kids are getting up to.

AMI applied to register the catchphrase as a trademark on April 12, only to find it had been beaten to the punchbowl - twice!

On February 1, Napier man Shaun Allen applied to use "Kelly Brown" and "Kelly Brown Beer" under the beer and other beverages class of the Trademark Act.

Then on April 5, Cambridge bar-owner Dean Risi applied to register "Kelly Browne's Place" as the trademarked name for his new tavern, along with "Kelly Browne", "Kelly Browne's" and "Kelly Browne's Bar, under the bar, restaurant and hospitality services section of the Act.

AMI, who have invested $3 million in the concept and claim exclusive use of the name, applied to trademark the name under a range of classes including insurance, financial, computer goods and education and entertainment services.

Operations manager Mark Robinson of the Intellectual Properties Office explained that the office worked on a first come, first served basis. He said that it was possible that the insurance company and bar could both trademark the name, as their businesses were very different.

A lawyer for Shaun Allen agreed with the points of difference between insurance and beer but was concerned about the Risi attempt to trademark the name, despite the slight change in spelling, with beer and bar services being too similar.

Risi's lawyer said that AMI should have got their act together and registered the name at the start of the campaign.

LESS TIME FOR DUCKS Duck season opened on Saturday, with a season shortened from eight to six weeks, and reduced bag limits, in response to reduced numbers of grey mallard ducks (down 77 percent in the Wellington region).
