NZ Documentary Tradition Lives On

15 December 2000

NZ On Air has announced funding for three documentary series, by and about New Zealanders, to screen in 2001.

TV3’s Inside New Zealand is this country’s longest running documentary series and is set to begin its tenth year of production. Documentary New Zealand, which screens on TV One, has been funded for the fourth year, and a new series, Our New Zealand, has been supported.

“This line-up of documentaries represents the diversity, balance and quality of programme that New Zealand viewers have come to expect and demand,” said NZ On Air Chief Executive Jo Tyndall.

“Inside New Zealand producers have consistently chosen topics with popular appeal and have presented them to viewers in an innovative way. Recent titles include Pauanui, The Truth About Maori, Burn!, Kiwi Buddha and Big.

“We are looking forward to another entertaining and compelling season with Inside New Zealand,” said Ms Tyndall.

Documentary New Zealand aims to reflect aspects of New Zealand life and culture in a unique social documentation of who we are as a country. Recent Documentary New Zealand titles include When The Landlord Comes to Call, Tough Choices, My Kainga My Castle, The Fighting Spirit and Autism-Life Among Strangers.

A third documentary series, Our New Zealand, will explore New Zealand’s special landscapes; its coasts, bush, harbours, mountains, rivers and lakes, and the relationships people have with those landscapes. Each episode of the series is about New Zealanders who have an empathy for a particular landform, their own stories and the stories of the land.
